Summary
Nearly 4 million adolescents seriously considered suicide within the past year. Youth from marginalized communities face a disproportionately high risk of suicide attempts due to intersecting systemic, social, and cultural factors. Peer led, school-based suicide prevention interventions have potential for great reach and impact because young people spend most of their time at school and peers are especially influential during this developmental period. The current proposal aims to develop, implement, and evaluate a pilot peer-led prevention program on suicide awareness and emotional wellness. The prevention program will be co designed with students (“Student Champions”) using a community based participatory research (CBPR) approach, through their involvement with the CHAMPIONS (Creating Health Advocates, Maximizing Potential in Our Neighborhood Schools) program at their school-based health center. The overarching goal of this proposal is to educate and empower marginalized youth on suicide prevention and facilitate a climate of emotional wellness in our local school community.
