Unveiling the Amplified Effects of Age on Mental Health in People Living with HIV: Disentangling Hormones, Discrimination, Social Support, and Inflammation

Summary

This study investigates the mental health of adults living with HIV, with a particular
focus on the impact of age. As the population living with HIV ages, understanding
and addressing mental health concerns in this group becomes increasingly
important. Older adults with HIV experience significantly higher rates of depression
and anxiety compared to the general population. Factors contributing to these
disparities include discrimination, social isolation, hormonal imbalances, and
chronic low-grade inflammation. These mental health conditions can further
worsen physical health outcomes in people with HIV. The proposed study will use
data from the Looking into the Heart of Cannabis & HIV (CANNHEART) study to
examine: (1) whether depression and anxiety symptoms are more severe in older
adults with HIV compared to younger adults with HIV; (2) how social support and
experiences of discrimination affect depression and anxiety risk in both younger
and older adults with HIV; and (3) whether social support interacts with
inflammation to influence vulnerability to depression and anxiety.
